Small Groups Half Day Raw Fiber Hands On

Hands-On Sisal Weaving Workshops and Classes

Spend a morning learning raw fiber extraction, basic loom technique, and finishing methods. Leave with a finished coaster and a clear understanding of how sisal becomes something you can use.

Doing

The workshop is not a lecture. You strip a leaf, extract the fiber, dry it, soften it, and weave it into a finished coaster you take home. The morning covers the full sequence: harvest to product. We limit sessions to four participants so everyone gets loom time and direct feedback. By the end, you understand why hand-processing matters, why fiber quality varies, and why a tight weave holds up where a loose one fails. No prior experience is required. The physical work is moderate: standing, pulling, and repetitive hand movements. Wear clothes you do not mind getting dusty.

Four hours, one finished piece

The beginner session runs from nine in the morning to one in the afternoon. You start with a fresh sisal leaf and learn to strip, wash, dry, and soften the fiber. By mid-morning you are at the loom, weaving a simple plain-weave coaster under guidance. We cover tension control, edge finishing, and basic pattern reading. You leave with your coaster, a printed reference card, and a list of local fiber suppliers. This session is designed for complete beginners with no weaving or craft background. The pace is deliberate and the instruction is one-on-one during loom work.
  • All materials and tools provided, including take-home reference card
  • Maximum four participants per session for individual attention
  • Morning tea and light refreshments included

Full day, complex patterns

The advanced session assumes you have completed the beginner workshop or have equivalent hand-weaving experience. We spend the full day on pattern variation: herringbone, twill, and open cross-weave structures. You learn to read and draft patterns, adjust tension for different densities, and troubleshoot common failures like warp breakage and edge curling. Each participant works on a larger piece — a placemat or trivet — and receives detailed feedback on technique. The session includes a working lunch and extended studio time. Fiber selection and batch variation are discussed in depth.

  • Pattern drafting and tension adjustment for complex weaves
  • Troubleshooting warp breakage and structural failures
  • Larger project piece to take home

"I brought my kitchen team for a team-building session. The pace was perfect, everyone made something they were proud of, and we left with a genuine appreciation for how much work goes into a single placemat."
